You all remember the scene from "White Men Can't Jump", the one where they are in the car listening to Hendrix, and Harrelson does not understand the difference between listening and hearing the music...

You all will recall at some point when you have been somewhere, and suddenly some background noise stops, an air conditioner or gentle hum or something, and all of a sudden you are acutely aware of the silence, the peace. Then the noise starts again, and now you can hear it, and it is nearly deafening, because since the noise stopped, you have been listening for it starting again.

The same is true with God. In order to hear Him, you need to first listen for His voice, and only His voice. Turn off the background noise of life and simply listen and you will hear Him, and it will be deafening, to the point that you can not hear anything else, and you wonder how you never heard Him before, when He is talking to you so clearly.
